Why do women have Vaginoplasty?

There are a variety of personal reasons why a woman may choose to have this surgery. Among the most common reasons are:

  • Repair after childbirth injury, pelvic surgery, or other trauma to the vagina
  • Scarring, asymmetry, or discomfort in the vaginal opening after tears or episiotomy.
  • Congenital conditions (such as being born with an absent or very short vagina) that affect menstruation, intercourse, or tampon use
  • Symptomatic vaginal laxity affecting sexual function, comfort, or pelvic support

What happens during Vaginoplasty?

The actual procedure depends on your condition and desired outcome. In general, for reconstruction or tightening, your surgeon will remove some of the vaginal lining while tightening underlying muscles and tissue. The objective is to narrow and strengthen the vaginal canal. The surgery typically uses a minimally invasive approach. During surgery, you will be given sedation or anesthesia for comfort.

Because there are a wide variety of reasons for this surgery, your surgeon will advise you in advance of both preparation and after care for the best results.
