Endometrial ablation is a procedure that uses heat, cold, or energy to permanently remove the uterine lining.

Why might I need Endometrial Ablation?

Endometrial ablation may be recommended by your provider to eliminate heavy periods that may be causing quality of life issues or anemia. Typically this will be recommended when other more conservative treatments have not been effective.

Endometrial ablation is not used on pregnant women, women who want to bear children in the future, or have uterine abnormalities.

How do I prepare for an Endometrial Ablation?

You will be given specific information about preparing for your Endometrial Ablation. Since some form of anesthesia or sedation will be used, it’s really important to follow the instructions carefully on food and drink, medications, and other significant factors.

What happens during an Endometrial Ablation?

The whole procedure typically takes about an hour or less. Here’s what will likely happen:

  • You will be on your back with your feet in stirrups similar to a pelvic exam.
  • Your cervix will be opened a small amount to allow for the necessary surgical instruments to reach your uterus.
  • Using one of several methods, the lining of the uterus is treated.

What happens after Endometrial Ablation?

You will wake up in our recovery area. Your vital signs will be monitored as the anesthesia wears off.

You will be given specific information to follow after your ablation. Women most often return to normal light activities within a few days. Be sure to pay attention to the instructions regarding tampons, douching, and vaginal intercourse.
