Neuromodulation Therapy

Neuromodulation is a treatment for urinary incontinence that uses gentle electrical signals to control the bladder. It is effective for many women in controlling urgency, frequency, and leakage. I often is identified by the manufacturer of the device such as Interstim, Axonics, and Altaviva.
Neuromodulation Therapy
Typically, our patients try a number of other solutions first before neuromodulation. Often this includes lifestyle changes, physical therapy, medication, and other approaches. In each of these cases, the therapy is directed toward the bladder or surrounding muscles. With neuromodulation, the therapy is directed at the nerves that control the bladder – similar to how a pacemaker is used for the heart.
For Sacral Neuromodulation, a small device that’s implanted under the skin in your back. A thin wire is placed near the sacral nerves. A short trial period allows you to try the device first to see if it is effective for your particular symptoms.
The actual procedure to implant the device is minimally invasive. Typically, the same type of sedation that’s used for a colonoscopy is used for this treatment. Most people recover quickly and go home within a short period of time.
There are differences between the types of devices that we use. We’ll help you choose the right one taking into consideration your body size, your comfort with charging the device at home, replacement surgeries, and other details. All of the systems we use are proven, effective therapies. The right one is the one that suits your lifestyle, your condition, and your preferences.
