About Cervical Dysplasia (Abnormal Pap Smear)

A Pap smear, often included in a routine pelvic exam, is a procedure that examines the cells from a woman’s cervix. When a Pap smear indicates atypical cells, it is called cervical dysplasia. This is not, on its own, a diagnosis. There are any number of conditions that may cause the test to be abnormal. An abnormal Pap smear is an indication that further testing may be required to determine the cause and course of treatment.

How is Cervical Dysplasia diagnosed?

Most often cervical dysplasia is discovered during a Pap smear. Women sometimes have symptoms that would indicate further testing is needed. These symptoms can include: abnormal vaginal discharge, spotting, bleeding after sex, painful sex, or post-menopausal bleeding.
