About Myomectomy

A myomectomy is a surgical procedure that removes uterine fibroids while leaving the uterus in place. This treatment is often chosen when women choose to keep or protect fertility.

When is a Myomectomy used?

Myomectomy is the gold standard when uterine fibroids cause symptoms, such as:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, anemia, or other symptoms from fibroids
  • Infertility or pregnancy loss where fibroids are thought to be a contributing factor

Are there different types of Myomectomy?

Our surgeons most often recommend two different types of myomectomy that are both minimally invasive procedures. The type of myomectomy that’s used is determined by the types of fibroids you have, your health, and your reproductive goals. These two types of myomectomy provide women with the treatment they need while minimizing pain and encouraging a faster recovery:

  • Laparoscopic Myomectomy where a laparoscope and small instruments are passed through small incisions in the abdomen
  • Hysteroscopic Myomectomy where the hysteroscope and tools are passed into the uterus through the vagina and cervix without using abdominal incisions

There is a third type of myomectomy that is more rare and used only when necessary. This is the abdominal myomectomy where an incision is made in the lower abdomen.

What happens during a Myomectomy?

You will receive a general anesthetic so you sleep comfortably during the procedure. Your surgeon will remove the fibroids and control bleeding. You’ll awake in our recovery room where your vital signs will be monitored until it’s safe for you to go home.

How to prepare for a Myomectomy

Before: Since this is a procedure that requires anesthesia, you must follow our instructions carefully prior to your appointment. Pay close attention to the restrictions involving food, liquids, and medications.

After a Myomectomy

You must have a ride home after the procedure. Other post-operative instructions will be provided to you. These instructions will cover activity limits, lifting, driving, and when it’s safe to resume intercourse and try for pregnancy.
