About LEEP: Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure

LEEP is a fast, in-office procedure that’s used to remove abnormal cells from the surface of the cervix. A thin, heated wire loop is used.

When is LEEP used?

Your provider may recommend LEEP if you have abnormal Pap or HPV results showing precancerous changes. Removing these cells lowers your risk for developing cervical cancer.

What happens during LEEP?

You’ll lie on an exam table with your feet in stirrups like a typical exam. A speculum is used and a local anesthetic is applied to your cervix. A thin wire loop is passed through the speculum and gently moved across your cervix to remove the abnormal cells. A special medication is applied to help stop bleeding.

What happens after LEEP?

Often, women return to normal daily activities within a day or two. We will provide specific instructions for you to follow after your procedure. Be sure to follow these directions carefully.
