Oophorectomy
An oophorectomy is surgery to remove one or both ovaries, the organs that store eggs and make hormones like estrogen and progesterone. An oophorectomy is used to treat an ovarian problem or to lower the risk of certain cancers. An oophorectomy may be performed at the time of a hysterectomy or as a separate procedure.
After a thorough physical exam, your surgeon may recommend this procedure for a number of different reasons, including:
Yes. Most often our surgeons will recommend a minimally invasive approach because it provides the best outcome for our patients. Typically an oophorectomy is done laparoscopically – where a laparoscope and small instruments are passed through small incisions in the abdomen. Infrequently a physician will recommend an open oophorectomy. In every case at our surgical center, our surgeons are committed to using minimally invasive surgical techniques whenever possible because of the advantage to your health and healing.
You will receive a general anesthetic so you sleep comfortably during the procedure. Your surgeon will remove one or both ovaries as determined in advance. You’ll awake in our recovery room where your vital signs will be monitored until it’s safe for you to go home.
Since this is a procedure that requires anesthesia, you must follow our instructions carefully prior to your appointment. Pay close attention to the restrictions involving food, liquids, and medications.
You must have a ride home after the procedure. Other post-operative instructions will be provided to you. These instructions will cover activity limits, lifting, driving, and other activities.
