About Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a surgical approach that uses small incisions and a tiny camera to look inside the abdomen and, if needed, treat problems. Rather than using large incisions from the past, this approach offers women an effective surgical and diagnostic procedure that is less painful than traditional surgery and provides for a much faster recovery.

When is Laparoscopy used?

Laparoscopy is used to examine, biopsy, or treat conditions. As a diagnostic tool, laparoscopy allows our surgeons to determine what is causing pelvic pain, infertility, endometriosis, and other conditions. Laparoscopy may be used to treat certain conditions like ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, and other similar conditions.

What happens during Laparoscopy?

You’ll receive sedation or anesthesia so you won’t feel pain. A small cut is made near your belly button and gas is gently pumped into your abdomen to help your surgeon visualize your organs. The laparoscope is inserted and if needed, additional tiny incisions are made to allow for instruments. When finished, the instruments and gas are removed and the small incisions are closed. You’ll wake up in our recovery room and your vital signs will be monitored. You’ll likely be able to go home that day.

Recovery from Laparoscopy

Because you’re having sedation or anesthesia, it’s important for you to read and follow our instructions prior to your procedure. Because laparoscopy may be used for a number of different reasons and conditions, you will be given information specific to your procedure, your recovery, and what to expect.
