Hysteroscopy

Advanced minimally-invasive surgical care for women in MN

What is a Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that lets your physician look directly inside your uterus with a tiny camera to diagnose and sometimes treat problems such as abnormal bleeding, polyps, or fibroids. This is a common procedure that has replaced other more invasive procedures. There are no incisions.

How is a Hysteroscopy performed?

A thin lighted telescope with a camera (hysteroscope) is passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. Your physician may look only or may perform a procedure at the same time – like removal of a polyp or fibroid. An incision is not required.

Why would a Hysteroscopy be recommended?

Typically, a Hysteroscopy is recommended for these reasons:

  • To evaluate heavy, irregular, or postmenopausal bleeding
  • To remove uterine polyps, small fibroids inside the cavity, or scar tissue (adhesions)
  • To investigate repeated miscarriages, infertility, or an abnormal uterine shape
  • To remove an IUD that is difficult to see or reach, or guide procedures like endometrial ablation

What happens before and during a Hysteroscopy?

Sedation or anesthesia is used, you’ll be given information in advance. Be sure to follow the instructions for food, drink, and medications. Plan to have someone drive you home.

The whole procedure typically takes about an hour or less. Here’s what will likely happen:

  • You will be on the operating table with your feet in stirrups similar to a pelvic exam.
  • You will receive sedation or anesthesia to make sure you’re comfortable and the procedure will begin.
  • You’ll wake up in our recovery room and your vital signs will be monitored.
  • As soon as you are ready, you’ll be able to go home.

What is recovery like after a Hysteroscopy?

Most women return to normal activities within a day or two. You will be given post-procedure instructions regarding tampons, intercourse and other details.
