Dilation & Curettage (D&C)

Why might I need a D&C?

A D&C may be recommended by your provider for one of these reasons:

  • Evaluate abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Remove tissue left in the uterus after a miscarriage, abortion, or delivery
  • Remove and test polyps, fibroids, or other growths from inside the uterus
  • Obtain a sample of the uterine lining (endometrial biopsy)

How do I prepare for a D&C?

You will be given specific information about preparing for your D&C. You will likely receive anesthesia or sedation so it’s really important to follow the instructions carefully on food and drink, medications, and other significant factors.

What happens during a D&C?

The whole procedure typically takes about an hour or less. Here’s what will likely happen:

  • You will be given anesthesia or sedation prior to your D&C; you’ll be comfortable and pain-free.
  • You will be on your back with your feet in stirrups similar to a pelvic exam.
  • A speculum is used to give the surgeon a clear view of your cervix.
  • Your cervix will be opened a small amount to allow for the necessary surgical instruments to reach your uterus.
  • The surgeon then removes the tissue from inside your uterus. Often it is sent to a lab for testing.

What happens after a D&C?

You will wake up in our recovery area. Your vital signs will be monitored as the anesthesia wears off.

You will be given specific information to follow after your D&C. Women most often return to normal daily activities within a day or so. Be sure to pay attention to the instructions regarding tampons, douching, and vaginal intercourse.
