What is Menorrhagia?

‍‍This term is applied when a woman experiences abnormally heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding during her menstrual cycle. Typically this means a period that lasts more than seven days and is very heavy.

What are the symptoms of Menorrhagia?

  • Blood clots larger than a quarter
  • Soaking through tampons or pads every hour for an extended period of time
  • Waking up during the night to change protection
  • Symptoms of anemia

What causes Menorrhagia?

Many different causes may contribute to this condition, including:

  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Fibroids and polyps
  • Adenomyosis
  • Cancer
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Endometriosis
  • Pregnancy issues
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease

How is Menorrhagia diagnosed?

In addition to a detailed medical history and physical exam, the following may be recommended:

  • Blood tests
  • Ultrasound
  • Pap smear
  • Endometrial biopsy
  • Hysteroscopy

What types of treatments and surgeries may be recommended to correct Menorrhagia?

If the condition doesn’t respond to hormonal regulation (such as birth control) or NSAIDs, surgery may be recommended. This includes:

  • Myomectomy (to remove fibroids or polyps)
  • Endometrial ablation
  • Hysteroscopy with polypectomy
  • Hysterectomy
