What is a Hymenectomy?

This is a minor procedure that’s used to remove extra hymen tissue that may be blocking or narrowing the vaginal opening. This allows the vagina to function normally. This procedure is used for health and comfort. It doesn’t determine or change virginity.

Why might I need a Hymenectomy?

A Hymenectomy may be recommended by your provider if hymen tissue is blocking the vaginal opening. This condition may make it difficult or painful for women to use tampons, have pelvic exams, or have vaginal intercourse.

How do I prepare for the procedure?

You will be given specific information about preparing for your Hymenectomy. Since some form of anesthesia or sedation may be used, it’s really important to follow the instructions carefully on food and drink, medications, and other significant factors.

What happens during a Hymenectomy?

The whole procedure typically takes about an hour or less. Here’s what will likely happen:

  • You will be on your back with your feet in stirrups similar to a pelvic exam.
  • The surgeon will gently separate the hymenal tissue to remove or open it..
  • Dissolvable stitches are used if needed to control bleeding.

What happens after a Hymenectomy?

If you have been given anesthesia or sedation, you will wake up in our recovery area. Your vital signs will be monitored as the anesthesia wears off.

You will be given specific information to follow after your hymenectomy. Women most often return to normal light activities within a few days. Be sure to pay attention to the instructions regarding tampons, douching, and vaginal intercourse.
