After a thorough physical exam, your surgeon may recommend this procedure for a number of different reasons, including:
In a vast majority of cases, our surgeons will use a laparoscopic approach where a laparoscope and small instruments are passed through small incisions in the abdomen. We use and recommend minimally invasive procedures such as this whenever possible because our patients recover faster and experience less pain.
You’ll be asleep during the procedure so you won’t feel pain. A small cut is made near your belly button and gas is gently pumped into your abdomen to help your surgeon visualize your organs. The laparoscope is inserted and if needed, additional tiny incisions are made to allow for instruments. When finished, the instruments and gas are removed and the small incisions are closed. You’ll wake up in our recovery room and your vital signs will be monitored. You’ll likely be able to go home that day.
Since this is a procedure that requires anesthesia, you must follow our instructions carefully prior to your appointment. Pay close attention to the restrictions involving food, liquids, and medications.
You must have a ride home after the procedure. Other post-operative instructions will be provided to you. These instructions will cover activity limits, lifting, driving, and other activities.
